Rules of Netiquette Assignment 2
The following is a fictional story in which some friends break every single rule of netiquette that you have just read about. Describe how each rule of netiquette (10) was broken* in this story using the form at the bottom of the page:
A group of friends get together to watch films on a regular basis and then talk about them afterwards as a means to increase their knowledge and appreciation of film. This is known as a film club and in this case works like most book clubs in which the members get a chance to suggest films that the group will be watching by taking turns. Aeron looks at a lot of lists of films and suggests in an e-mail to the group that they watch Citizen Kane next which Aeron has found to be generally accepted as the top film on many of these lists. Zhao is tired of Aeron's highbrow film suggestions and sends Aeron an e-mail discussing her distaste for this choice and carbon-copies it to the rest of the group. In the e-mail, Zhao is quite nasty, accusing Aeron of acting pretentiously by suggesting Citizen Kane to the group. Aeron. who is normally quite shy and passive is infuriated by the e-mail and sends Zhao a really long e-mail tearing apart all films that Zhao has suggested for the last two years of their film club, particularly when the entire group was forced to sit through Plan 9 from Outer Space at Zhao's suggestion. (and of course Aeron carbon-copies this e-mail to the rest of the group as well). The rest of the group sits back as watches as the e-mails between Aeron and Zhao become increasingly vicious.
So enraged are the two by this exchange that the fight breaks out onto the Internet. Zhao decides to go onto as many forums dedicated to the discussion of great films and badmouths Citizen Kane. Zhao has never heard of the movie before and as a result makes up several scenes in the film to make it sound generally terrible. Unfortunately, one of the discussion boards is monitored by Aeron who volunteers to check for spam in the discussion board on weekends. Aeron decides to respond to these posts by posting Zhao's full name and home phone number. Aeron also uses her monitor status to get Zhao's username and password for the discussion groups and begins to make several posts as Zhao under other topics, making it sound as though Zhao has terrible taste in films.
This fight results in the two friends never speaking to each other again. Zhao's parents have to change their phone number to stop all of the angry phone calls that they are receiving. Aeron is asked to no longer assist with monitoring the film discussion board and is barred from making future posts. Both friends are asked not to attend future get-togethers with their film club.
*A rule is considered "broken" if a friend acted badly according to the rule
